Ascension is an artistic project by Chris Hickman, an Ohio based beatmaker and student of various art forms of music. The foundation is deeply rooted in Jazz,Soul,Funk and Hip-Hop. Collecting records since the age of 14, Ascension has been inspired by legendary musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal, Lonnie Liston Smith. Hip Hop producers such as Marley Marl, Ced Gee,Pete Rock,Diamond, and Jay Dee were pioneering teachers of Ascension's craft as well. The focus of the project is bringing a sound that compliments the artist of yesterday as opposed to just making a dope beat. Whenever sampling techniques are used the purpose is complimenting the "source".
While a student @ The University of Toledo, Ascension made a breakthrough trying his hand @ production for the first time. FL Studio was the software of choice because of ease and cost. Through trial & error, hardship, frustration and patience Ascension sharpened his skills on the program masterfully. A year and a half later the Akai MPC 1000 and Roland XP-50 Synthesizer was added to the arsenal for additional versatility.
The debut album "Momentum" has been in development for about a year. Mostly instrumental, the album will also showcase a few surprise vocalists. "Momentum" will display a musically emotional journey through the mind. "I want the album to speak to the listener, because I feel music should have more of a purpose than just being entertainment, Ascension says. "Momentum" will undoubtedly be a shining point of 2006. |
